Sunetra Pawar Set for Unopposed Win in Baramati Bypoll as Congress Among 23 Withdrawals (X)
Mumbai: The by-election to be held for Baramati assembly seat of Maharashtra now seems to be almost one-sided. Congress has decided to withdraw the name of its candidate Akash Vishwanath More. With this, the possibility of Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar being elected unopposed has become stronger. Until now, a total of 23 candidates have withdrawn from the field, due to which the contest seems to be almost over.
This congressional decision has completely changed the electoral picture. Earlier, the contest seemed interesting, but now, with the opposition's withdrawal, the situation has become one-sided. The party is said to have taken this step for strategic reasons.
Congress had fielded advocate Akash More as its candidate from this seat. Following party president Mallikarjun Kharge's approval, he declared his candidacy. However, the decision to withdraw the name has been made at the last moment.
Baramati has long been considered the stronghold of the Pawar family. Former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar had won from here several times in a row. In such a situation, his political influence on this seat is clearly visible.
An emotional atmosphere is also being seen in the area regarding this by-election. After the death of Ajit Pawar, his wife Sunetra Pawar was made the candidate, due to which there is talk of a wave of sympathy.
Initially, an appeal was being made to all the parties that Sunetra Pawar should be elected unopposed, but after Congress entered the fray, the contest became high-profile. Now this situation has changed again with the party's withdrawal.
If all the candidates withdraw, then there will be no need for voting and Sunetra Pawar can be elected unopposed. However, the official announcement will be awaited.
This step of Congress points towards new equations in the politics of the state. Experts are considering this as a strategic decision, which may impact the upcoming elections also.
